Master the STAR Method

Structure every behavioural answer: Situation – set the scene. Task – your role. Action – exactly what you did. Result – the measurable outcome. Practise out loud before your interview.

📋

Know Your Certifications

Have expiry dates memorised for BLS, ACLS, PALS, CNOR, CCRN, or whichever apply. Interviewers often ask "Is your BLS current?" as a quick screen.

🔬

Research the Unit

Look up the facility's surgical volume, patient population, Magnet status, and any recent awards. Drop one specific fact into your answer — it signals genuine interest.

🛡️

Patient Safety First

Frame every answer through a patient-safety lens. Mention JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals, hand hygiene compliance, time-outs, or fall prevention where relevant.

💬

Prepare Your 3 Questions

Ask about orientation length, preceptor support, unit culture, or upcoming EHR changes. Avoid salary questions in the first interview. Good questions signal seriousness.

🧘

Show Self-Awareness

When asked about weaknesses, choose a genuine one you are actively improving — not a thinly-veiled strength. "I'm strengthening my assertiveness in escalating concerns" sounds real.

🤝

Teamwork & Conflict

Have a ready story about resolving a disagreement with a surgeon or colleague — showing you stayed professional, communicated clearly, and focused on the patient outcome.

📊

Use Numbers Where Possible

"I managed 4 patients per shift" or "our unit maintained 98% compliance" is more compelling than vague descriptions. Quantify your experience whenever you can.

📧

Follow Up Within 24 Hours

Send a brief, specific thank-you email. Reference one detail from the conversation to show you were listening. It keeps your name fresh and signals professionalism.
